Setting Up Fixed Wireless Internet at Home: A Complete Guide

WiFi router setup for home internet connectivity

Fixed wireless internet has become the go-to solution for homes across Grenada that want reliable, high-speed connectivity without waiting for cable or fibre installation. Using the same 4G LTE technology that powers your smartphone, a fixed wireless setup delivers consistent internet to your entire household through a dedicated router or outdoor antenna. Here's everything you need to know to get set up.

What Is Fixed Wireless Internet?

Unlike mobile hotspot devices that you carry around, fixed wireless internet uses a permanently installed device at your home to receive 4G LTE signals from the nearest cell tower. This device connects to a Wi-Fi router that distributes the internet throughout your home, just like a traditional broadband connection. The key difference is that there's no physical cable running to your house. The connection travels wirelessly from the tower to your equipment.

Choosing the Right Equipment

Spice Mobile offers several equipment options depending on your location and speed requirements. Understanding the differences will help you pick the best fit.

Novatel T1114

The Novatel T1114 is an indoor 4G LTE gateway that doubles as a Wi-Fi router. It's the simplest option to set up since it plugs directly into a power outlet and starts broadcasting Wi-Fi immediately. It's best suited for homes in areas with strong signal coverage, such as St. George's, Grand Anse, and other coastal towns. The T1114 supports up to 16 connected devices and provides speeds sufficient for streaming, browsing, and video calls.

BEC 6200

The BEC 6200 is another indoor option but with enhanced antenna capabilities. It features external antenna ports, which means you can attach a directional antenna if your indoor signal isn't quite strong enough. This makes it a versatile choice for homes that are slightly farther from a tower or in areas with moderate signal strength. It supports both 4G LTE and includes a built-in Wi-Fi router with Ethernet ports for wired connections.

Baicells Nova

For homes in more challenging locations, such as valleys, hillside properties, or areas farther from towers, the Baicells Nova outdoor CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) is the premium choice. This device mounts outside your home, typically on a wall or pole, and points directly at the nearest cell tower. Because it sits outdoors with a clear line of sight, it captures a much stronger signal than any indoor device could. The Baicells Nova connects to an indoor Wi-Fi router via an Ethernet cable, delivering the fastest and most reliable connection available.

Optimal Placement Tips

Regardless of which device you choose, placement matters enormously for performance:

  • Indoor devices: Place near a window that faces the general direction of the nearest cell tower. Avoid placing the device in basements, closets, or rooms surrounded by thick concrete walls. Elevation helps too, so a second-floor window is usually better than ground level.
  • Outdoor devices: Mount the Baicells Nova as high as practically possible. The installer will use a signal meter to find the optimal angle and direction. Avoid obstructions like trees, water tanks, or neighbouring buildings between the device and the tower.
  • Wi-Fi router placement: Once the signal reaches your indoor router, standard Wi-Fi placement rules apply. Keep the router in a central location, away from microwaves and other electronics that cause interference, and elevated off the ground.

Choosing Your Speed Plan

Spice Mobile offers fixed wireless plans from 1 Mbps up to 10 Mbps, all with unlimited data and no contracts. Here's a quick guide to choosing:

  • 1 Mbps: Suitable for basic browsing, email, and social media. Good for 1-2 light users.
  • 3 Mbps: Handles video calls, music streaming, and standard-definition video. Works well for a small household.
  • 5 Mbps: Our most popular plan. Supports HD streaming, working from home, and multiple devices simultaneously.
  • 10 Mbps: Best for large households, home offices, or small businesses with heavy internet usage.

Installation and Getting Started

For indoor devices like the Novatel T1114 and BEC 6200, setup is straightforward. Insert the SIM card, plug in the device, and connect your phone or laptop to the Wi-Fi network using the credentials printed on the device. The entire process takes about five minutes.

For the Baicells Nova outdoor installation, Spice Mobile provides free professional installation.
